Homework, whether it’s a big project or a small worksheet, is something that all students face in middle school. Some students hate it, and others think it’s helpful. That includes TJMS Vice Principal Mr. Hall.

Mr. Hall remembers that,  back when he was our age, he spent anytime between one and three hours each afternoon doing homework, and that was after doing other activities such as sports.

According to Mr. Hall, there are district guidelines for homework for each grade level and the weekly amount of homework being assigned. He said that the average amount of homework students are getting is about 20-40 minutes per night per teacher.

We asked Mr. Hall about his perspective on homework assignments that are an important part of every student’s life. “I agree with the daily practice that students get when they do homework. We need to practice to become proficient. Some teachers assign it so students can learn at home and then ask questions at school,” Mr. Hall said. “I assume that students with a negative mindset would consider homework as a negative thing, and students with a positive mindset really see homework as something very beneficial,” he said.
